All four of these wines were purchased by me.
Snake River Winery 2014 Blauer Zweigelt. This Austrian grape varietal was created in 1922 by crossing the St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch grapes. Made by winemaker Scott DeSeelhorst from grapes sourced in the winery’s own Arena Valley vineyard in the Snake River Valley, this wine is 13.5% alcohol by volume and is priced at $15.00.
Appearance: Medium purple.
Aroma: Sweet cherry, allspice and a hint of raspberry.
Palate: Medium-bodied, nice balance of acidity and tannins.
Finish: Moderate lingering spice with a nice tingle.
Rating: Excellent! B+
Split Rail Winery The Horned Beast {Cernunnos} GSM. This award winning wine is 83% Syrah 8% Grenache 9% Mourvédre and is made by Jed Glavin from grapes sourced in Idaho and Washington. This fruit forward beast was recently awarded Best of Class and Gold in the 2016 Sunset International Wine Competition. It is 14.9% alcohol by volume and is priced at $29.00.
Appearance: Dark ruby.
Aroma: Black cherry, blackberry jam, baking spices and a touch of earthy minerality.
Palate: Medium-bodied; nicely structured acidity and tannins with berry flavors.
Finish: Long lasting that tingles delightfully.
Rating: Outstanding! A-
Ste. Chapelle 2013 Panoramic Cabernet Sauvignon. Ste. Chapelle is the largest winery in Idaho as well as the state’s leading producer. They offer an extensive selection of wine to please novice and enthusiast alike. The Panoramic series is aimed toward more refined palates, but it can be enjoyed by anyone seeking a delicious experience. This wine was aged for 20 months in new French oak and is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon 16% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. It is 13.9% alcohol by volume and is priced at $22.00.
Appearance: Deep purple.
Aroma: Dark fruit –blackberry patch and black cherry, with cedar, wet stone and a hint of lavender.
Palate: Fruit translates to the palate with medium acidity and ripe tannins.
Finish: Short to medium with sensations on the front and sides of the tongue.
Rating: Great! B
Koenig Vineyards 2014 Zinfandel | The Devil’s Bedstead. Made by winemaker Greg Koenig from grapes sourced in the Snake River Valley, this wine is named for a granite peak in the Pioneer Mountains of Idaho and is indeed like hiking through lush forest in the summertime. This fruit forward Zin is 15.9% alcohol by volume and priced at $25.00.
Appearance: Dark purple.
Aroma: Boysenberry and plum with hickory and crushed rock.
Palate: Berry translates to the palate with cinnamon and earth.
Finish: Long lasting with spice dancing on the top of the tongue.
Rating: Outstanding! A-
